    Course Includes

Successful qualification on this course will result in a new level 3 award (Level 6 Scotland) in First Aid at work being issued to the learner. The course will refresh the main elements covered on the original First Aid at work course.

The critical thing to remember is that as soon as the certificate expires, the First Aider is no longer considered competent to act as a First Aider in the workplace which may well leave the employer with a shortfall of First Aiders. Therefore, it would be prudent to arrange their First Aid at Work Requalification before they expire.

    Should you attend?

Are you a first aider whose level 3 first aid at work qualification is due to expire? If so, this course is for you.

A first aider can renew their qualification by attending this 2-day course if:

    • Their qualifications are still up to date.
    • If it is within one month past the expiry date.
    • If the first aider has lapsed by more than one month, but no longer than two months, then the first aider can requalify by attending this 2-day course, providing that the “special considerations” have been applied.

    Special considerations include:

    • A signed letter from the employer to the training provider stating the reasons why, in their opinion, the First Aider is suitably experienced to attend the 2-day course and does not require a full 3-day FAW course.

    Or:

    • The provider of the training makes a decision after discussions with the employer or the first aider, and deciding their previous experience is sufficient to attend the 2-day requalification course.
    • If the first aider has lapsed beyond three months, they must attend the full 3-day course.

    Objectives

A range of subjects is covered, including:

    • Legalities, responsibilities, and reporting
    • Assessment of the situation
    • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
    • Fractures and spinal injuries
    • Control of bleeding
    • Poisoning

    • Eye injuries

    Duration

This is usually delivered as a 2-day course in the classroom environment. There is the flexibility to deliver in shorter sessions across a longer timeframe.

    Exam format

Practical assessment by the instructor, along with written test papers. A three-year qualification will be issued to those who satisfy the criteria. Also, it is strongly recommended by the HSE that learners keep themselves up to date regularly. The annual 3-hour refresher course is the ideal way to demonstrate this.
